Many of the health problems that we “live” with are problems we can control by getting rid of what should be moving through our systems, not collecting in them. It is estimated that there is 5-12 kg of accumulated waste matter sticking to the average colon.

Quite simply, the colon is the sewage system of the body. Not only does food waste accumulate in the colon, but also millions of dead cells and tissues. You are not only what you eat, as has often been pointed out, you are what happens to what you eat while it is inside your body. The very best of diets can be no better than the very worst if the colon is clogged with a collection of waste and corruption.

There is a saying in Ayurveda (the traditional Indian science of health) that if you had to choose between a proper diet along with poor digestion or a poor diet with ideal digestion, the latter choice would be the wiser. Of course, it’s best to have both perfect digestion and proper diet, but the important point is that for a balanced diet to have its proper effect, digestion much be strong enough and balanced enough to properly assimilate the nutrients contained within the diet.

Within the colon, nutrients are absorbed that are vital to the brain and the body’s entire neurological system. Other than the brain and the central nervous system, no other part of the human body is as sensitive to the numerous influences of environment and everyday living as is the digestive system. It has been found that when the colon’s surface cell layer is healthy, not only do nutrients pass more readily into the bloodstream but the absorption of toxins is also impaired.

As well as being literally at the centre of your body, the colon is central to physical detoxification. As with your feet and the method of reflexology, the colon is connected to every system of the body through reflex points. When these various points are stimulated, they effectively create releases within their related organs. Every time waste matter accumulates in the colon which results in fermentation and putrefaction, a disturbance takes place both in the affected area of the colon and its corresponding part of the anatomy.

Frequency of bowel movements is a good health indicator. How often do you have a bowel movement? People on good diets usually have one to three each day – if you are not having regular releases, there can be many causes. Another indicator of your colon’s health is your bowel transit time – how long it takes food to move from the first swallow until it exits the body. When your system is working well, the average amount of time it takes is twelve to twenty-four hours. Something to think about!

While the physical effects of detoxification are most measurable, the emotional reasons for detox are also significant. Cleansing our minds of negative thought patterns is essential to health - the physical detoxification helps this mental process. Every function and activity of your system, day and night, physical, mental and spiritual is dependant on the attention you give it.

Originally colonics were accomplished by squatting in a stream bed and drawing water up into the colon, then expelling it. In Ancient Egypt a ram’s horn or gourd was hollowed out and utilized as the first primitive colonic machine. Later, enema pots and plants shaped in the form of plastic tubing (reeds) were constructed. Sophisticated colonic irrigation equipment was perfected just at the turn of the 20th Century. In Florida, herons and other similar birds stand by a river or pool of water, tilt their long beaks and inject water into the rectum in order to give themselves a colonic.
